Health Canada approved two Novo Nordisk rebranded versions of its semaglutide products on December 22, 2025: Plosbrio, identical to Ozempic, and Poviztra, identical to Wegovy [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada].

A defensive product line

According to Endor Health, the two rebranded versions are identical to the branded originals but come in different packaging, a strategy that allows Novo Nordisk to compete in the generic market while maintaining some control [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. The company is "considering" introducing Plosbrio and Poviztra to compete with generics once they enter the Canadian market [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada].

The rebrand approvals came roughly two weeks before Novo Nordisk's data exclusivity for semaglutide expired in Canada on January 4, 2026 [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. Canadian patent protection had previously lapsed earlier than expected due to a maintenance-fee issue, and Novo Nordisk has stated this was a deliberate strategic decision rather than an oversight [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada].

Context: the generic timeline

Health Canada authorized the first generic semaglutide injection on April 28, 2026, making Canada the first G7 country to approve a generic version of the drug [Source: canada.ca/en/health-canada/news/2026/04/canada-becomes-the-first-g7-country-to-approve-a-generic-version-of-semaglutide.html]. The submission was filed by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories [Source: canada.ca/en/health-canada/news/2026/04/canada-becomes-the-first-g7-country-to-approve-a-generic-version-of-semaglutide.html].

The BMJ reported that Canada became only the second country in the world to approve a generic form of semaglutide, made possible after Novo Nordisk did not pay a C$250 annual fee [Source: bmj.com/content/393/bmj-2026-597166]. A second generic, from Apotex, has also been approved, with seven other applications still under review [Source: bmj.com/content/393/bmj-2026-597166].

The applicant queue

As of January 2026, Health Canada was reviewing nine submissions for generic semaglutide from companies including Sandoz Canada, Apotex, Teva Canada, Taro Pharmaceuticals, Aspen, and Pharmacare Canada [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. Health Canada's target review timeline is 180 days, though complex submissions can take longer [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada].

The delay reflects semaglutide's complexity. Unlike traditional generic pills, semaglutide is a synthetic peptide delivered via injection pen, and Health Canada requires manufacturers to demonstrate that generic versions match the brand-name drug in safety, efficacy and quality [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. Tirzepatide products remain on patent

Endor Health notes that only semaglutide is losing patent protection. Eli Lilly's medications Mounjaro and Zepbound, both containing tirzepatide, remain under patent protection in Canada with no imminent expiry [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. Eli Lilly has stated it "remains confident in the differentiated benefits of tirzepatide" [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada].

What the rebrand strategy signals

Endor Health reports that Novo Nordisk is also investing in next-generation GLP-1 therapies, including oral semaglutide formulations and combination drugs such as CagriSema [Source: endorhealth.com/article/generic-ozempic-coming-to-canada]. The oral semaglutide product Rybelsus is already on the Canadian market.
