Generic semaglutide has arrived in Canada

3 of 9 generic semaglutide products approved by Health Canada

May 1, 2026 β€” Apotex approved β€” Health Canada approved Apo-Semaglutide Injection, the second generic semaglutide product authorized in Canada. Type 2 diabetes indication only.

June 29, 2026 β€” Sevmia (Apotex) approved β€” the first generic semaglutide authorized by Health Canada for chronic weight management, and the first generic referencing Wegovy (rather than Ozempic). Developed by Apotex with Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies. The two earlier 2026 approvals reference Ozempic and cover the Type 2 diabetes indication only; Sevmia is the first generic approved for weight management. Most news outlets reported the name as β€œSvemia,” a transposition β€” Apotex and Health Canada spell it β€œSevmia.”

Through 2026 β€” Six additional generic semaglutide submissions remain under Health Canada review. Further decisions expected in the coming weeks and months; manufacturer production scale-up and pharmacy availability typically lag approval by weeks to months.
