How to Get a Mounjaro Prescription in Alberta (2026)

Mounjaro's Health Canada authorization is for type 2 diabetes only — there is no weight-management indication in it. The CMA notes a doctor may still prescribe it off-label for other reasons, which is lawful and a decision between a patient and their prescriber (CMA). None of that shifts at the provincial border — it's the backdrop for everything below. What does shift in Alberta specifically is who can start that prescription in the first place: Alberta is the one place in Canada where a pharmacist — not just a physician or nurse practitioner — can do it directly, under a specific credential covered below. Your family doctor. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) covers "medically required services provided by a physician or surgeon" (Alberta.ca, Health care services covered in Alberta), so a regular visit to discuss Mounjaro carries no direct charge to you when it's a medically necessary consultation. The real advantage isn't the billing — it's that a doctor who already has your chart is better positioned to document history and follow up over Mounjaro's escalating dose schedule.

A walk-in clinic. Covered by AHCIP on the same basis, if the clinic bills the province directly. A clinician meeting you for the first time is working from what you can tell them in the room, nothing more — and given Mounjaro's diabetes-only authorization, that matters more for an off-label request than for one that matches the label.

This is the one place this page genuinely diverges from every other provincial Mounjaro guide in this family. Everywhere else in Canada, a pharmacist can fill, renew, or adapt an existing Mounjaro prescription but cannot start a new one. In Alberta, a pharmacist can — but only if that pharmacist holds Additional Prescribing Authorization (APA), an extra credential applied for after at least a year of direct patient care on the clinical register. It is not automatic for every licensed pharmacist, and whether a given APA holder chooses to start a given prescription is their own clinical judgment, the same as it is for a physician (Alberta College of Pharmacy).

Two things worth being precise about before you assume this is a shortcut. First, an APA credential is held by a subset of Alberta pharmacists, not the default for everyone behind the counter — not every pharmacy has one on staff, and not every shift is covered by one. Second, holding APA is not the same as an obligation to use it: even where an APA-credentialed pharmacist is available, they're exercising the same kind of clinical discretion a physician does, and given Mounjaro's diabetes-only authorization, many Alberta pharmacies may still prefer to refer you to a physician or nurse practitioner rather than prescribe it directly — especially for a request outside the authorized indication. The only way to know what a specific pharmacy will do is to ask that pharmacy directly.

Apo-semaglutide — Health Canada's generic version of Ozempic — is a different medication, not a substitute for Mounjaro, but it's priced at a flat $149/month at the 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 mg pen strengths through Felix, off-label for weight management. The same fraud warning signs apply in Alberta as anywhere in Canada. The CMA states plainly that if a site says you can get a GLP-1 drug without a prescription, that's a major red flag (CMA).
