How to Get a Wegovy Prescription in BC (2026)

Wegovy's Health Canada authorization expressly includes chronic weight management, with body mass index (BMI) eligibility criteria written into the monograph — a different shape from Ozempic or Mounjaro, whose own indications are diabetes-only, off-label for weight management. That authorized shape doesn't change at the provincial border: a BC prescriber assesses the same BMI-based criteria as anywhere else in Canada. What does change locally, and what this page covers instead: what a BC pharmacist can and can't do for you directly, an urgent-care route that's specific to how BC organizes primary care, which telehealth provider has confirmed it serves BC and how it handles Wegovy specifically, how the province's public drug program treats a weight-management prescription procedurally, and where to fill it once you have one.

Your family doctor. "Medically required services you receive from physicians and midwives are medical benefits of MSP" (Province of British Columbia, Services Covered by MSP), so billing a medically necessary consultation carries no direct charge to you. A doctor who already has your chart is also better positioned to document the measured height, weight, and any weight-related comorbidity the BMI criteria reference, rather than relying on what you can report yourself.

A walk-in clinic. Covered by MSP on the same basis, if the clinic bills the province directly. A clinician meeting you for the first time can take a measurement in the room, but won't have your prior history of comorbidities or treatments on file — exactly the kind of documentation a private insurer's prior-authorization review tends to ask for later.

An Urgent and Primary Care Centre (UPCC). A BC-specific option the province runs alongside walk-in clinics: same-day, team-based clinics that also do double duty as a primary-care entry point. The Province of British Columbia states that "Urgent and primary care centres provide same-day healthcare services for urgent non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries. UPCCs can also provide primary care to unattached patients" (Province of British Columbia, B.C.'s Primary Care System). For someone without a family doctor, that second sentence is the relevant one — a UPCC visit is billed the same MSP-covered way a walk-in clinic visit is. A pharmacist. In British Columbia specifically, a pharmacist cannot start a new Wegovy prescription. The province's Pharmacist Prescribing for Minor Ailments and Contraception (PPMAC) program authorizes a defined list of minor ailments plus contraception — a GLP-1-class medication is not part of that list (College of Pharmacists of British Columbia, PPMAC effective June 1, 2023).

Where a BC pharmacist can help is with a Wegovy prescription a physician or nurse practitioner already wrote: adaptation authority — changing a dose or formulation for continuity of care — is confirmed under the College's Policy 58. Exactly how refills and renewals work in practice varies by pharmacy, so ask yours directly rather than assuming a fixed rule.

Alberta is the only jurisdiction in Canada where independent pharmacist prescribing for any Schedule I drug is implemented, and even there it's limited to pharmacists holding a specific added credential — British Columbia is neither. British Columbia's public drug program is BC PharmaCare — a single income-based plan, not a split like Ontario's ODB/Trillium pair. Registration is required before any benefit applies, and coverage for a specific drug depends on your registered plan tier and whether that drug is currently listed on the BC Formulary. Separately, PharmaCare's Special Authority process lets a prescriber request coverage for a specific drug outside the standard formulary listing (PharmaCare Formulary Search, gov.bc.ca) — a process that exists regardless of which GLP-1-class drug you're asking about.

What differs for Wegovy specifically is the likely outcome, not the process. The CMA notes that coverage "looks very different for weight management" than for diabetes: only a small number of private plans offer partial coverage for GLP-1 drugs approved for chronic weight management, and public drug plans generally do not cover them at all (CMA) — our own national Wegovy guide states the same fact. Not having a family doctor doesn't disqualify you from care, and it's common enough to be the norm for millions of people across Canada, British Columbia included. Three routes still work without one: a walk-in clinic, a UPCC (which, unlike a typical walk-in, can also provide temporary primary-care attachment), and telehealth — all MSP-billed or otherwise no direct charge, if the clinic bills the province directly. Whichever you choose, bring what you can — recent bloodwork, blood pressure readings, prior diagnoses, and your pharmacy's medication history — since Wegovy's BMI-and-comorbidity criteria are usually easier to document from an existing chart than from memory alone.

The same fraud warning signs apply in BC as anywhere in Canada. The CMA states plainly that if a site says you can get a GLP-1 drug without a prescription, that's a major red flag (CMA). Health Canada adds that a legitimate online pharmacy "Requires a valid prescription from a physician or other health practitioner licensed to practice in Canada," is licensed by a provincial or territorial pharmacy regulatory authority — in British Columbia, that's the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia — and provides a street address located in Canada (Health Canada, Choosing a safe online pharmacy). Because coverage for weight-management drugs is limited, cost pressure is real — and that's exactly what unauthorized sellers target. A price far below what licensed Canadian pharmacies charge is a warning sign, not a bargain.
