No generic version of Zepbound is approved, submitted, or under review at Health Canada. Zepbound and Mounjaro are both Eli Lilly Canada brand-name products that contain the same active ingredient, tirzepatide, and tirzepatide remains patent-protected in Canada โ no generic is expected for 7 or more years, with protection extending well into the 2030s. That is the same status already published on our Zepbound price page and Mounjaro price page, which answer the same question for each brand individually.
One path a generic can take in Canada is an "authorized generic" โ a version manufactured by the original brand's own maker and sold under a different brand name, typically at a lower list price, rather than an independent submission from another manufacturer. Novo Nordisk has already used this route for its own semaglutide brands: Plosbrio (Novo Nordisk's authorized generic of Ozempic) and Poviztra (Novo Nordisk's authorized generic of Wegovy), both approved by Health Canada on December 22, 2025. If Eli Lilly ever took the same approach with tirzepatide, an authorized generic would work the same way โ Lilly-manufactured, sold under a separate brand name, priced below Zepbound or Mounjaro's current list price. No such product has been announced for either brand; this explains how the mechanism works, not whether or when Lilly might use it.
While no generic exists, brand-name pricing for both tirzepatide products is fully live and tracked below โ see the current lowest verified price for Zepbound and for Mounjaro at Canadian pharmacies we track. For contrast, the other main GLP-1 active ingredient, semaglutide, moved from patent-protected to having two approved generics in a matter of months once its own Canadian data exclusivity expired on January 4, 2026 โ see our generic Wegovy & semaglutide approval tracker for that timeline. Tirzepatide has not reached that stage; this page will update the moment anything changes.
