On June 29, 2026, Health Canada authorized Sevmia, a generic semaglutide made by Apotex — the first generic version of Wegovy and the first generic semaglutide approved in Canada for chronic weight management.

Sevmia (spelled S-E-V-M-I-A) references Wegovy, Novo Nordisk's weight-management semaglutide, as its brand comparator. It was developed by Apotex, a Canadian-based manufacturer, together with Orbicular Pharmaceutical Technologies. Note that many news outlets reported the product as “Svemia” — a transposition of the letters; Apotex's press release and the Health Canada release both spell it Sevmia.

What was approved

According to Health Canada, Sevmia is authorized for chronic weight management in patients aged 12 and older, as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity — for adults with obesity (BMI ≥ 30) or overweight (BMI ≥ 27) with at least one weight-related comorbidity, and to reduce the risk of a non-fatal heart attack in adults with established cardiovascular disease and a BMI ≥ 27. Sevmia is a once-weekly injection; dosing follows the official Sevmia product monograph.

The third generic — but the first for weight loss

Sevmia is the third generic semaglutide cleared in Canada, but the first that references Wegovy and the first indicated for weight management. The earlier two — Dr. Reddy's (approved April 28, 2026) and Apotex's Apo-Semaglutide Injection (approved May 1, 2026) — reference Ozempic and cover the Type 2 diabetes indication only. Health Canada has said six other generic semaglutide submissions remain under review, with more decisions expected in the coming weeks and months.

What will it cost?

No Sevmia price has been published yet. Health Canada notes that generic medicines are typically 45–90% cheaper than the brand-name product once competition builds, so generic Wegovy should cost meaningfully less than brand Wegovy over time. Exact launch pricing, participating pharmacies, and provincial coverage have not been announced. We will update our Generic Wegovy tracker with verified Sevmia prices the moment they are confirmed.

If you take Wegovy

If your prescription is written for Wegovy, ask your pharmacist or prescriber whether a generic substitution with Sevmia is available once it is stocked in your province. As always, GLP1Prices.ca lists drug names, strengths, quantities, pharmacies, prices, and verification dates — we do not provide medical advice.
