What's different in Alberta
Wegovy's Health Canada approval includes chronic weight management, with body mass index (BMI) criteria set out in its monograph (Wegovy Product Monograph, section 1). Those criteria are the same in every province. What does differ in Alberta is who can start a prescription: a pharmacist with Additional Prescribing Authorization can, as explained below. See the Canada-wide guide for the monograph text.
What this page covers instead: what an Alberta pharmacist can and can't do for you, how Alberta's drug coverage treats Wegovy, and where to fill the prescription once you have one.
Family doctor and walk-in clinics in Alberta
Your family doctor. The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) covers "medically required services provided by a physician or surgeon" (alberta.ca, Health care services covered in Alberta), so a medically necessary visit costs you nothing directly. A doctor who has your chart can also record a measured height and weight and any weight-related condition, which the BMI criteria refer to.
A walk-in clinic. A physician's medically required services are covered there too. A clinician meeting you for the first time can measure you, but only has the history you tell them.
Can a pharmacist prescribe Wegovy in Alberta?
Only a pharmacist who holds Additional Prescribing Authorization (APA) can start a new prescription. APA is the Alberta College of Pharmacy's authorization "to prescribe Schedule 1 drugs." It is not automatic: a pharmacist applies for it, usually after at least a year of full-time direct patient care on the clinical register, and must receive it, listed on their practice permit, before prescribing (Alberta College of Pharmacy, Additional Prescribing Authorization, read October 24, 2026).
Not every pharmacist holds APA. The College says so: "Because not all pharmacists hold APA, Albertans may at times be assessed by a pharmacist who cannot prescribe medication, except in emergencies or when adapting an existing prescription." Its standards also say a pharmacist with APA who is prescribing "must see the patient in person, or must have seen the patient previously and have an established, current professional relationship over a period of time" (Alberta College of Pharmacy, Clarifying prescribing authority for pharmacists, version of May 26, 2026, read October 24, 2026).
So ask the pharmacy whether a pharmacist with APA works there before you go. Even then, whether to prescribe is that pharmacist's call. The Canadian Pharmacists Association's chart notes that pharmacists provide these services "at their discretion," and shows Alberta as the only jurisdiction where independent pharmacist prescribing for any Schedule I drug is implemented (CPhA). See who can prescribe GLP-1s in Canada for every province and territory.
Getting a Wegovy prescription online in Alberta
An online visit is a practical route if you don't have a regular Alberta provider or a pharmacist with APA nearby. Confirm that a service serves Alberta before you pay; not every provider covers every province.
The table at the top of this page lists the online providers on our list that serve Alberta and whose own website says they prescribe Wegovy, with their fees. Confirm which medication a provider will prescribe for you, and its current price, before you start an intake. Approval is not guaranteed.

Alberta's drug coverage β what happens for Wegovy
The Alberta Drug Benefit List "defines the prescription drugs and drug products covered by the Alberta government's supplemental health benefit programs." Some drugs need special authorization: "Prior approval must be granted to ensure coverage by special authorization" (alberta.ca, Drug Benefit List).
Alberta Blue Cross runs these programs for the government. Non-Group Coverage "is available to all Alberta residents under 65 years of age and their dependants," for a monthly premium (alberta.ca, Non-Group Coverage). Coverage for Seniors gives people 65 and older premium-free drug coverage (alberta.ca, Coverage for Seniors). Since October 1, 2026, if you have private or other coverage, that plan pays first and the government plan "acts as the safety net" (alberta.ca).
The interactive Drug Benefit List returns no Wegovy product (Alberta iDBL). That fits the CMA's general point that "public drug plans generally do not cover" GLP-1 drugs approved for chronic weight management (CMA). Check the list, your pharmacist or your prescriber before you assume either way.
If you have private insurance instead, our insurance coverage checker walks through the prior-authorization process most private plans use for GLP-1 medications, and works the same way regardless of province.
Where to fill it in Alberta and what it costs
A valid Wegovy prescription can generally be filled at any licensed Alberta pharmacy: chains, independents or mail-order. Pharmacies set their own cash prices, and the same pen can cost more at one than at another.
Across 4 pharmacies in Alberta, Wegovy runs $417β$481 per pen (updated October 29, 2026).
Pharmacy-by-pharmacy prices, including the cheapest we found in Alberta, are on the Wegovy in Alberta price table. SEVMIA, a generic semaglutide for chronic weight management, was authorized on June 29, 2026 (SEVMIA Product Monograph); the interactive Drug Benefit List returns no SEVMIA product either. Its prices are on our Sevmia guide for Alberta. How we collect prices is on our methodology page.
No family doctor in Alberta?
Not having a family doctor doesn't stop you getting care. Three routes still work: a walk-in clinic, an online visit and, in Alberta only, a pharmacist with APA. Bring what you can, such as recent bloodwork, blood pressure readings, past diagnoses and your pharmacy's records, since the BMI criteria refer to weight-related conditions.

Red flags
The same warning signs apply in Alberta as anywhere in Canada. The CMA says that if a site offers a GLP-1 drug without a prescription, that's a major red flag (CMA). Health Canada says a legitimate online pharmacy "Requires a valid prescription from a physician or other health practitioner licensed to practice in Canada," is licensed by a provincial or territorial pharmacy regulatory authority (in Alberta, the Alberta College of Pharmacy), and gives a street address in Canada (Health Canada, Choosing a safe online pharmacy).
APA is a regulated credential, not a way around an assessment. Be wary of anyone offering a prescription without asking about your health history. Because most people pay for Wegovy themselves, a price far below a licensed pharmacy's is a warning sign too. See the full checklist on the Canada-wide guide.

Update log
- Guide published, verified August 26, 2026.
- The pharmacy price sentence now reads "updated" with the date of our newest price record.
- New title and first paragraph, and a table of online providers that serve Alberta and whose own website says they prescribe Wegovy. Added Wegovy's Alberta Drug Benefit List status. The page no longer singles out one provider. Rewrote the drug coverage section from alberta.ca, and corrected the AHCIP and pharmacist descriptions to match their sources.
- Rewrote the pharmacist section from two Alberta College of Pharmacy pages: only a pharmacist with APA can prescribe, not every pharmacist holds it, and one who prescribes must see you in person or have an established relationship with you. New page title and description.
