Ozempic coverage in Alberta
Public plan: Alberta government-sponsored drug programs
Alberta's public drug coverage comes through the Alberta government-sponsored drug programs, such as Non-Group Coverage and Coverage for Seniors, which Alberta Blue Cross administers using the Alberta Drug Benefit List (ADBL).
On the ADBL, Ozempic and generic semaglutide are step therapy / special authorization products. Step therapy means the plan checks your recent claims history and can approve the pharmacy claim automatically when the list's step-therapy conditions are met. Otherwise your prescriber sends a special authorization request on form ABC 60012. Special authorization is granted for 24 months. The ADBL publishes the criteria with each product.
Two Ozempic pens (DINs 02471469 and 02471477) are listed. The 0.68 mg/mL pen (DIN 02540258) is still under review, so it is not covered. Generic semaglutide from Apotex and Dr. Reddy's has been listed since July 1, 2026, and least-cost-alternative pricing has applied to the 1.34 mg/mL pens since August 1, 2026: the plan pays brand Ozempic only up to the generic price.
Wegovy is not on the ADBL.
