Ozempic coverage in Manitoba
Public plan: Manitoba Pharmacare
In Manitoba, drug coverage comes from the Manitoba Pharmacare program, which uses the Manitoba Drug Benefits and Interchangeability Formulary.
Ozempic and generic semaglutide are not regular (Part 1 or Part 2) benefits. They are Exception Drug Status (EDS) benefits: Pharmacare pays only after an EDS request is approved under the criteria Manitoba publishes in its EDS list. Your prescriber applies by mail or fax, and Manitoba tells you by letter whether coverage is approved. Semaglutide is not on the list of drugs whose EDS approval is indefinite, so an approval can expire and need a renewal request.
Ozempic's 2 mg and 4 mg pens (1.34 mg/mL) became EDS benefits on January 21, 2021, and the 0.68 mg/mL pen on March 19, 2024. Generic semaglutide from Apotex and Dr. Reddy's was added to EDS on August 1, 2026.
Ozempic and the generics are in the same interchangeable category, and Pharmacare reimburses interchangeable drugs only up to the lowest price in their category. That means Pharmacare pays brand Ozempic only up to the generic price.
We did not find Wegovy on Manitoba's EDS list, in the formulary or in the bulletins.
