Ozempic coverage in Newfoundland and Labrador
Public plan: Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP)
The Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP) has five plans: the Foundation, 65Plus, Access, Assurance and Select Needs plans.
Ozempic and generic semaglutide are covered by special authorization: NLPDP pays only after a special authorization request is approved under the criteria it publishes in its special authorization drug criteria. Coverage includes the pens up to the 1 mg pen; the 2 mg pen isn't listed. NLPDP pays for only one drug at a time from the DPP-4 inhibitor, SGLT2 inhibitor and GLP-1 classes, and not for injectable and oral semaglutide together.
Generic semaglutide from Apotex and Dr. Reddy's was listed on July 1, 2026, as interchangeable with Ozempic under the same special authorization criteria. NLPDP then cut claims for brand Ozempic back to the generic's lowest price. Because of generic supply shortages, NLPDP will pay for both Ozempic, in full, and Apo-Semaglutide until December 31, 2026. The special authorization has to name the product the pharmacy dispenses, and claims are billed per pen.
Wegovy is not on NLPDP's coverage list.
