Frequently asked questions

Can I get Ozempic without a family doctor?
Yes — a family doctor is not the only prescriber. A nurse practitioner, a walk-in clinician, a telehealth practitioner, or an authorized pharmacist in Alberta can prescribe. What you cannot do is skip the prescription — Ozempic is prescription-only in Canada. Current listings are on the Ozempic page, and the process is covered in our Ozempic prescription guide.
Can a walk-in clinic prescribe Wegovy?
A walk-in clinician can prescribe. Whether a given clinic will start long-term therapy at a first visit, or would rather refer you onward or ask you to return with records, varies by clinic and clinician — ask directly rather than assuming either way. Bring what you have: recent bloodwork, a medication list, and your pharmacy's history. See the Wegovy page and our Wegovy prescription guide.
Do I need a family doctor to renew a GLP-1 prescription?
No. Pharmacists can renew or extend an existing prescription in every jurisdiction except Nunavut, and can adapt a dose, formulation, or regimen everywhere except the Northwest Territories and Nunavut (CPhA). For most people without a doctor, the pharmacy is the most durable link in the chain.
Can a pharmacist start a GLP-1 prescription for me?
Only in Alberta, where independent pharmacist prescribing for any Schedule I drug is implemented; every other province and territory is marked not implemented (CPhA). Minor-ailment prescribing elsewhere runs off condition lists that do not cover starting semaglutide. Even in Alberta, that authority belongs specifically to pharmacists who hold Additional Prescribing Authorization (APA), not every pharmacist in the province — and whether an APA-holding pharmacist prescribes a given drug still comes down to their own clinical judgment.
What happens if my telehealth service shuts down or I move provinces?
Keep your own records — prescription, intake, bloodwork, medication list — so a new prescriber is not starting blind. Ask in advance whether a prescriber can continue prescribing for you at a new address, and confirm with the receiving pharmacy where a prescription can be filled after a move.
Should I still try to get a family doctor?
Yes, and start now — it runs in the background. Provinces operate their own systems: British Columbia's Provincial Attachment System matches people with providers "who have the capacity to take on new patients," and Ontario's Health Care Connect "finds you a family doctor, nurse practitioner or primary care team that is accepting new patients," while noting that registering "does not guarantee that a primary care clinician will be found for you immediately." Check what your province runs.
