Canada Positioned as Global Test Market for Generic Semaglutide

Sandoz now expects the Canadian generic semaglutide market to take shape in the third quarter of 2026, positioning Canada as the first major country where generic versions of the molecule in Ozempic and Wegovy can be sold.

Patent lapse opens the door

The core patent for semaglutide, the molecule in Ozempic and Wegovy, lapsed in Canada after missed maintenance fee payments and the expiry of data exclusivity on January 4. Novo Nordisk had held a Canadian patent on semaglutide for years but allowed the paperwork to lapse after a $450 fee went unpaid in 2019, triggering a countdown to an earlier expiry than the natural end in March 2026.

Sandoz pushes launch to Q3 2026

Sandoz CEO Richard Saynor said the company had originally aimed to launch in the first half of 2026, but now expects the Canadian generic market to take shape in the third quarter of 2026. The delay followed requests from Health Canada that both Sandoz and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories provide additional data to meet regulatory standards.

Karine Matteau, vice-president in charge of the commercial office of Sandoz Canada, said the company developed its generic semaglutide using an entirely synthetic process, without using living cells as Novo Nordisk's version does, which creates an easier regulatory pathway. Health Canada records show Sandoz's submission was accepted for review in November.

Multiple approvals already recorded

Several generic files have already cleared Health Canada. According to the generic semaglutide tracker, Dr. Reddy's Semaglutide Injection was approved April 28, 2026, Apo-Semaglutide Injection from Apotex was approved May 1, 2026, and Sevmia from Apotex — the first generic referencing Wegovy — was approved June 29, 2026. Aspen Pharmacare Canada received approval for Aspen-Semaglutide on July 17, 2026, with two additional Aspen Semaglutide Injection listings recorded August 25, 2026.

Health Canada's July 31, 2026 snapshot of generic submissions under review listed nine semaglutide submissions from eight companies. The regulator currently has nine generic semaglutide applications under review while working through a broader backlog of drug files.

Pricing framework and plan impact

Once three generic competitors are on the market, Canadian policy will drive list-price discounts of about 65 percent. Under the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance tiered framework, three or more competing manufacturers of injectables trigger a reference price of 35 percent of the brand reference price.

Sandoz describes Canada as the world's second-largest semaglutide market after the United States. Ontario now publishes a Sevmia price listing at $325.0480 CAD, though retail pharmacy quotes remain unconfirmed.

Global ripple effects

Aspen Pharmacare plans to launch its generic semaglutide first in Canada and emerging markets before moving into Mexico, New Zealand, Europe and the United States. Semaglutide patents are expiring sooner in countries that did not grant extensions, including Canada, China, India and Brazil.

Meanwhile, Eli Lilly's Mounjaro, sold as Zepbound in the US, still has about a decade of patent life remaining. Consumers comparing options for Rybelsus or injectable brands can review the insurance coverage checker and the FAQ for current information.
