CBC News issued a correction on May 1, 2026 clarifying that Novo Nordisk's regulatory exclusivity on semaglutide ended in January 2026, while its patent had expired some time before that, after initially reporting the patent itself expired in January [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

What the correction said

In its coverage of Health Canada's authorization of the first generic version of Ozempic, CBC initially stated that Novo Nordisk's patent expired in January in Canada. The broadcaster's correction, time-stamped May 1, 2026, 12:45 PM EDT, said: in fact, its regulatory exclusivity ended in January; its patent expired some time before that [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

Why the distinction matters

The clarification separates two different forms of market protection. CBC noted that Novo Nordisk's regulatory exclusivity had protected semaglutide from generic competition, and that patients and doctors have been anticipating generics since that exclusivity ended [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

Health Canada confirmed it authorized the Dr. Reddy's Laboratories generic semaglutide injection after a review demonstrated the drug meets the regulator's criteria for safety, efficacy and quality for generic drugs, and that the product is indicated for the once-weekly treatment of adult patients with type 2 diabetes to manage blood sugar levels [Source: canada.ca/en/health-canada/news/2026/04/canada-becomes-the-first-g7-country-to-approve-a-generic-version-of-semaglutide.html].

Clinician commentary

Dr. Kaberi Dasgupta, a physician-scientist and professor of medicine at McGill University, told CBC: I think it's a great thing, adding that these medications are quite expensive and we know with generics, it brings down the prices substantially [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

Dasgupta also cautioned that just because it's lower cost doesn't mean automatically anybody should use it, and emphasized the need for public health messaging so the products are not used inappropriately [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

Mina Tadrous, an associate professor at the University of Toronto who researches drug policy, told CBC that with three generics on the market the price could drop to about $100 or less, depending on dose [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566].

Pricing context

CBC reported that a monthly supply of Ozempic or Wegovy costs between $300 and $400, sometimes even more depending on the dose [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-generic-health-canada-9.7180566]. Current pharmacy listings tracked on GLP1Prices.ca show a wider band for Ozempic, ranging from $222 to $663 CAD across 150 sampled prices, reflecting variation by pen strength and pharmacy.

Health Canada has stated that many generic medications in Canada are 45 to 90 per cent cheaper than brand-name versions [Source: canada.ca/en/health-canada/news/2026/04/canada-becomes-the-first-g7-country-to-approve-a-generic-version-of-semaglutide.html].

The pipeline behind the headline

Reuters reported that Health Canada said it is reviewing eight other applications for generic semaglutide from different companies and expects to make more decisions in the coming weeks and months [Source: reuters.com/legal/litigation/health-canada-approves-first-generic-version-novo-nordisks-ozempic-2026-04-28]. BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan Seigerman told Reuters: Investors will follow the evolution of the market in Canada closely as a test case to see if and how generics can compete with branded peptides [Source: reuters.com/legal/litigation/health-canada-approves-first-generic-version-novo-nordisks-ozempic-2026-04-28].
