Felix Publishes Generic Semaglutide Price Tiers: $112-$240 Per Pen

Canadian telehealth provider Felix has published a tiered pricing forecast for generic semaglutide, projecting per-pen prices ranging from approximately $240 with one generic on the market down to $112 once three or more competitors are approved [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

The pricing tiers

According to Felix's published table, with one generic available the estimated price would be $240 per pen, or about 75% of the brand price. With two generics on the market, the estimate falls to $160 per pen (about 50% of brand). With three or more generics available, the estimated price drops to $112 per pen, roughly 35% of the brand price [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist]. Felix based these estimates on a current brand price of $320 per pen [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

The forecast tracks the framework established between the Canadian government and generic manufacturers, which lowers the price of generics as more enter the market [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist]. Felix noted the exact timing of price reductions is still uncertain and that prices will likely fall in stages over the year as more generic manufacturers enter the market [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

How the forecast compares to current pharmacy prices

Current pharmacy prices listed on GLP1Prices.ca for Ozempic range from $200 to $663 per package, while Wegovy ranges from $270 to $550. Felix's $320 reference point for brand semaglutide falls within those ranges, and its three-generic projection of $112 per pen would represent a substantial reduction from current cash-pay prices [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

Felix added that brand-name prices are also expected to drop as competition increases [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

Regulatory backdrop

Health Canada is currently reviewing nine submissions for generic versions of semaglutide [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-glp1-health-canada-generic-9.7034498]. Some of those applications were filed as early as February 2024 [Source: theglobeandmail.com/business/economy/article-apotex-fda-approval-generic-ozempic-drug-health-canada-decisions/].

Novo Nordisk allowed the regulatory exclusivity for its semaglutide drugs to expire on January 4, making Canada the first country where generic versions could legally launch [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-glp1-health-canada-generic-9.7034498]. Apotex Inc. has filed three of the pending Canadian generic semaglutide applications, submitted in January, April and November of 2025 [Source: theglobeandmail.com/business/economy/article-apotex-fda-approval-generic-ozempic-drug-health-canada-decisions/].

Health Canada has a target of 180 days to assess generic drug applications, though spokesperson Marie-Pier Burelle wrote on March 25 that reviews may take longer if data is missing or additional data are required, with the review clock pausing while the regulator awaits additional information from manufacturers [Source: theglobeandmail.com/business/economy/article-apotex-fda-approval-generic-ozempic-drug-health-canada-decisions/].

What Felix says patients should expect

Felix wrote that it may take time for generic companies to scale up production, so availability could be limited at first or even sporadic throughout the year depending on demand and production capacity [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist]. The company also noted that because only semaglutide is going off-patent, lower prices are expected for semaglutide medications but not necessarily for other products such as Mounjaro or Zepbound [Source: felixforyou.ca/generic-semaglutide-waitlist].

Pharmaceutical policy researcher Mark Johnson, a Health Canada spokesperson, said evaluating generic semaglutide drugs is more complex than many other medication approvals because semaglutide was originally developed using biological processes, but the generic versions can be made using more simple chemical means [Source: cbc.ca/news/health/ozempic-glp1-health-canada-generic-9.7034498].
