Health Canada has approved a new indication for Rybelsus (semaglutide) tablets. It is the first label update of this kind for a GLP-1 taken by mouth in Canada.
A First for an Oral GLP-1
The approval adds a new indication to the Rybelsus product monograph. It is the first time Health Canada has approved this indication for a GLP-1 medication taken by mouth.
The decision follows Health Canada's review of clinical trial data. The new indication is in addition to the uses Rybelsus was already approved for.
Regulatory Timeline and Process
Health Canada's approval came through a Notice of Compliance issued in January 2026, according to the agency's Health Product InfoWatch. The new indication expands the approved uses listed in the Rybelsus product monograph.
Novo Nordisk Canada confirmed the approval in a press release.
Market Context
The approval comes as Health Canada reviews nine generic semaglutide applications, with approvals expected in mid-2026. Wegovy, an injectable semaglutide, recently received a comparable label update; Rybelsus is the first tablet to receive one.
Ozempic and other injectable semaglutide products already had comparable approvals, but no oral formulation had received one in Canada before.

Who the New Indication Covers
The adults the new indication applies to are defined in the Indications section of the Rybelsus product monograph. The update does not extend Rybelsus to adults outside the group it was already approved for.
Pricing and Coverage Impact
Current Rybelsus pricing in Canada ranges from approximately $180-220 monthly for cash-paying patients, depending on strength and pharmacy. The new indication may factor into insurance coverage decisions as private and public payers review it.
Each provincial drug program decides separately whether to change its coverage criteria for Rybelsus.
Competitive Landscape
The approval strengthens Rybelsus's market position ahead of generic competition. While generic semaglutide applications focus on injection formulations similar to Ozempic, no generic oral versions are currently under Health Canada review.
