Toronto-based Vimy Pharma, founded in 2024 by two former Novo Nordisk executives, expects to file its application for generic semaglutide with Health Canada in the coming weeks, with production potentially taking place at a new critical medicines facility in Edmonton [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

A Canadian-based challenger

Vimy Pharma co-founder David Suchon told CBC News, "You could say we're betting everything on this one drug" [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154]. Suchon and co-founder Farris Smith, who serves as president, are both former executives of Novo Nordisk, the Danish company that manufactures brand-name Ozempic [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

Smith said the company is hoping to lean into support for local brands, telling CBC, "I think there has been a groundswell of interest and support from across the country to support local brands and local companies" [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

Edmonton production plans

If approved, the drug would be mass-produced at a new critical medicines production centre in Edmonton operated by non-profit Applied Pharmaceutical Innovation (API), which announced the federally and provincially backed facility in 2023 following the COVID-19 pandemic [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

API CEO Andrew MacIsaac said the organization brought in specialized equipment from Italy in preparation for generic semaglutide manufacturing, though the equipment will also be used for other medicines [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154]. According to MacIsaac, there could be approximately 30 direct jobs involved in the launch of Vimy Pharma's generic product, with room to add more roles if capacity needs to expand [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

MacIsaac described the project as "really exciting" as API's first commercial project [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

Where Vimy fits in the queue

Vimy Pharma's filing would join a crowded review pipeline. Eight other applications are already under review by Health Canada, according to CBC News [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154]. Health Canada spokesperson André Gagnon told CBC in an email, "Health Canada cannot provide timelines for decisions, nor can we speculate on potential warnings or indications, while reviews are ongoing" [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].

Of the filings currently under review with company names attached, none are owned or headquartered in Canada, CBC reported [Source: cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/canada-semaglutide-company-9.7118154].
